Broadcasts

A broadcast is an email you send to your contacts: its subject line, pre-header, HTML body, plain-text version and attachments. Broadcasts are reusable. You create one under Campaigns → Broadcasts and can then schedule it as often as you like, to different lists and segments. See Scheduling Campaigns.

The Broadcasts page

Go to Campaigns → Broadcasts. Above the table:

  • Add New creates a broadcast. See Create a broadcast.
  • Templates opens Broadcast Templates, ready-made broadcasts you can copy into your account. It appears when templates are available. See Broadcast templates.
  • Bulk Actions → Delete deletes the broadcasts you've ticked.

Use the search box to find a broadcast by name, group, subject or date.

ColumnWhat it shows
NameThe broadcast's name, with a badge for how it was made: Editor (HTML editor), Builder (Drag & Drop builder) or AI Builder.
GroupThe broadcast group it belongs to. New broadcasts start in Unsorted.
SubjectThe subject line.
SizeThe size of the HTML content, for example 20.52 KB.
Created OnWhen the broadcast was created.
ActionsEdit, Delete and Duplicate.

Create a broadcast

Go to Campaigns → Broadcasts and click Add New.

Step 1: Choose an editor

Under Select your favorite editor/builder to create a broadcast, pick one:

EditorButtonBest for
HTML EditorUse HTML EditorWriting in a rich-text editor, or pasting HTML you already have. It has a code view for editing the HTML directly.
Drag & Drop BuilderUse BuilderDesigning visually with blocks and ready-made sections, no code needed. See Drag & Drop Email Builder.
AI Email BuilderUse AI BuilderDescribing the email you want and letting Mumara AI write and design it. See Using the AI Builder.

Step 2: Choose a template

After Use HTML Editor or Use Builder, the Choose a Template panel opens below the editor cards:

  • Blank Template (Start from scratch) starts with an empty email.
  • Each template card has a thumbnail and a category. Click Use This to start from it. Templates marked Assigned are provided by Mumara; the others are your own.
  • Filter with Select Category, or search by name, keyword or tag with Search Template.
  • View Templates opens your email templates, where you can upload your own. See Email Templates.

Use AI Builder skips this step and opens the AI Email Builder, because Mumara AI writes the email from scratch.

Step 3: Edit the draft

Mumara ONE creates a draft broadcast called Untitled Broadcast with the subject Untitled Subject, in the Unsorted group, and opens it:

  • For the HTML editor, the broadcast editor opens with the template's content in the HTML Body.
  • For the Drag & Drop builder, the builder opens full screen. When you click Save & Exit there, you land in the broadcast editor to finish the subject line and settings.

Give the draft a real name and subject before you schedule it. The rest of this page describes the broadcast editor.

The broadcast editor

The editor has three tabs: Content, Settings and Preview & Test. A bar at the bottom of the page holds the buttons:

ButtonWhat it does
Next / BackMoves to the next or previous tab. It doesn't save.
Save & Keep EditingSaves and stays in the editor.
SaveSaves and returns to the Broadcasts page. It appears on the last tab.
CancelReturns to the Broadcasts page without saving.

Content tab

Email Subject & Add Email Pre-header

Email Subject is required. It's the first thing recipients see, so it largely decides whether they open the email.

  • A counter shows the length against a guide of 70 characters. Most inboxes show 40 to 60 characters on mobile.
  • The emoji button at the end of the field inserts an emoji.
  • Variables work here, for example %%first_name%% or a spintax tag.

Add Email Pre-header is a switch. Turn it on to add the preview text that inboxes show next to or below the subject line. Its counter guides you to 120 characters. Use it to add to the subject rather than repeat it.

Generate with AI under either field asks Mumara AI for a suggestion based on your content. See Mumara AI in the editor.

HTML Body

The main content of the email, required. For HTML-editor broadcasts it's a rich-text editor with a toolbar for formatting, images, links and a code view.

The card header has these buttons:

  • Import Email Content from a URL opens a panel. Enter the address of an HTML page, for example https://example.com/newsletter.html, and click Import to load it into the editor. Switch on Download Images to copy the page's images to your account so they don't depend on the original site.
  • Inspect with AI and AI Builder appear on saved broadcasts when Mumara AI is part of your plan. See Mumara AI in the editor.

For broadcasts made with the Drag & Drop builder, the card shows the builder instead of the editor: Design your email with Open Email Builder, or, once there's content, Your email is ready with Preview and Edit Design. See Drag & Drop Email Builder.

Insert Variable

Insert Variable, below the editor, opens a searchable list of every tag you can use, grouped into tabs:

TabInsertsExample
SystemDetails of the message, list and campaign, and the standard links%%unsubscribelink%%
FieldsThe contact's fields, including your custom fields%%first_name%%
SpintaxYour spintax tags{{greeting}}
DynamicYour dynamic content tags[[vip-offer]]
ProfileDetails from your own account profile, such as your name and address%%pf_address_line_1%%

All shows everything. Type in the search box to filter, and click a variable to insert it at the cursor.

The System variables are:

VariableTagWhat it inserts
Sender Name%%sender_name%%The sender name the email is sent with
Sender Email%%sender_email%%The sender email address
Recipient Email%%recipient_email%%The recipient's email address
Reply-to Email%%replyto_email%%The reply-to address
Bounce Email%%bounce_email%%The return-path address Mumara ONE sets for the message. You'll rarely need it.
Today's Date%%todays_date%%The date the email is sent
Web View URL%%web_version%%A Web Version link that opens the email in a browser
List Name%%list_name%%The name of the contact's list
Broadcast Name%%broadcast_name%%The name of the broadcast
List id%%list_id%%The ID of the contact's list
Message id%%message_id%%A unique ID for the message
Campaign id%%campaign_id%%The ID of the broadcast
Sending Domain%%sending_domain%%The sending domain
Tracking Domain%%tracking_domain%%The tracking domain of your sending domain
Schedule id%%schedule_id%%The ID of the scheduled campaign
Confirmation Link%%confirmurl%%A Confirm link for double opt-in confirmation
Unsubscribe Link%%unsubscribelink%%An Unsubscribe link
Timestamp / Timestamp UTC%%timestamp%%, %%utc_timestamp%%The time the email is sent, as a Unix timestamp
Put your postal address in the footer

Many anti-spam laws require your postal address in marketing email. The Profile variables, such as %%pf_address_line_1%% and %%pf_city%%, fill it in from your account profile, so every broadcast stays up to date.

Text Body

The plain-text version of the email, required. It's shown by email apps that don't display HTML, helps accessibility, and a message with both versions looks more trustworthy to spam filters.

  • Convert HTML to Text fills it from your HTML body. Check the result and tidy it up.
  • Generate with AI writes a plain-text version with Mumara AI.

Pre-defined templates

When you start a blank broadcast in the HTML editor and ready-made broadcasts are available, the Content tab also shows Select from the pre-defined templates. Search the list and click Use to load one into the editor.

Settings tab

Broadcast Details

FieldWhat to enter
Broadcast NameRequired. How you'll find the broadcast in lists and reports. Recipients never see it.
GroupThe broadcast group. Click + (Add New Group) to create one without leaving the page.
DescriptionOptional notes for yourself or your team.

Groups keep a long list manageable: for example one group per newsletter, product or month.

Email Optimization

Responsive Email adds a viewport tag and responsive CSS to the email's HTML so it displays well on phones, tablets and the main email apps, including Outlook, Gmail, Apple Mail and Samsung Mail. It also adds dark-mode support. Switching it off removes the added code again, and switching it on twice doesn't add it twice.

Emails made with the Drag & Drop builder are already responsive.

Attachments

Drop files onto the upload area, or click it to browse. Under the area you'll see the largest file you can attach (Max size) and the file types allowed (Allowed). Uploaded files are listed with a button to remove them.

Link rather than attach where you can

Attachments make every message bigger, slow down sending and can make spam filters suspicious. For large files, upload them somewhere and link to them instead.

Additional Headers

Adds custom email headers to every message sent from this broadcast, for example a header your own systems use to recognize the campaign. Click Add New, then enter a Header name and its Value. Header names can't contain spaces or special characters other than hyphens (-).

You don't need to add a List-Unsubscribe header here. Switch on Add List-Unsubscribe header when you schedule the campaign instead. See Compliance.

Preview & Test tab

Email Preview

Shows the saved broadcast as recipients will see it. Switch between Desktop, Tablet and Mobile widths, and click Refresh after saving changes.

Spam Score Analyzer

Click Analyze Spam Score to check the subject line, content structure, common spam trigger words and compliance elements such as the unsubscribe link. The results list issues and how to fix them. The check runs in your browser and doesn't send anything.

Send a Preview

Sends a test email so you can check the broadcast in a real inbox. Click the card to open it.

FieldWhat to enter
Sending DomainThe domain the test is sent from. Active domains are listed under Eligible Domains. Domains that aren't ready are listed under Ineligible Domains with the reason, for example pending authentication, and can't be chosen. See Sending Domains.
Sending NodeThe pool the test is sent through. In Mumara ONE the entries in this list are your pools. See Dedicated Pools.
Email Address where the preview will be sentYour own address, or a colleague's.
Associate a Contact idOptional. Enter the ID of a contact to fill in the variables with that contact's details.

Click Send Preview.

Variables in test emails

Without Associate a Contact id, a test email doesn't fill in variables such as the first name, web version or unsubscribe link. Enter a contact's ID to see them as that contact would. Save the broadcast first so the test includes your latest changes.

Mumara AI in the editor

When Mumara AI is part of your plan, the editor has these extra tools. Each request uses AI credits; see AI Credits.

ToolWhereWhat it does
Generate with AIUnder Email Subject, the pre-header and Text BodySuggests a subject line or pre-header, or writes the text version, from your content.
Inspect with AIHTML Body card, on saved HTML-editor broadcastsReviews the email and lists issues by severity. Choose a Focus area: All (Full Review), Deliverability, Design & Layout, Content Quality or Accessibility, then Run Inspection. Apply Fixes applies the suggested changes.
AI BuilderHTML Body card, on saved HTML-editor broadcastsOpens the AI Email Builder with this broadcast, so you can redesign it by chatting. See Using the AI Builder.

Broadcasts made with the Drag & Drop builder have the same kinds of help inside the builder, under the AI button. See AI Assistant in the Builder.

Broadcast templates

Templates on the Broadcasts page opens Broadcast Templates: ready-made broadcasts published by Mumara. Click Clone next to one to copy it into your account, or Clone All to copy them all. Copies land in the Unsorted group, where you can edit them like any other broadcast.

These are different from the email templates in the Choose a Template panel, which are designs you start a new broadcast from. See Email Templates.

Manage broadcasts

  • Edit. Choose Edit from the row's Actions menu, change what you need on any tab, and save.
  • Duplicate. Choose Duplicate to copy a broadcast. The copy is named after the original with - copy at the end. It's the quickest way to make a variation, for example for a split test.
  • Delete. Choose Delete and confirm, or tick several broadcasts and choose Bulk Actions → Delete.
Broadcasts that are in use

Editing a broadcast changes it for every campaign that hasn't sent it yet; emails already sent aren't affected. Deleting a broadcast can break the campaigns, split tests and triggers that use it, and a trigger that sends a deleted broadcast is paused. Check before you delete, or duplicate the broadcast and change the copy.

Good practice

  • One main call to action. Make it obvious what you want the reader to do.
  • Design for mobile. Use a single column, large buttons and Responsive Email, and check the Mobile preview.
  • Write alt text for images. Many email apps block images until the reader allows them.
  • Keep the subject specific. Say what's inside; save emojis for when they add something.
  • Always send a test. Check the rendering, click every link and read the text version.

Troubleshooting

ProblemWhat to check
A variable shows as typed, such as %%first_name%%In a test email this is expected unless you used Associate a Contact id. Otherwise, insert the variable with Insert Variable rather than typing it, and check that the field exists. For a fallback, use an inline condition: [if:first_name]Hi %%first_name%%[else]Hi there[endif].
Images don't showUse full https:// image addresses. When importing from a URL, switch on Download Images. Some email apps block images until the reader allows them.
The broadcast won't saveEmail Subject, HTML Body, Text Body and Broadcast Name are required.
An attachment won't uploadCheck the file against Max size and Allowed under the upload area, and that its extension matches its type.
No sending domain to choose in Send a PreviewYour domain isn't Active yet. Finish verifying it under Setup → Sending Domains.
Inspect with AI or Generate with AI is missingSave the broadcast first. If they're still missing, Mumara AI isn't part of your plan; contact Mumara support.
