Evergreen Campaigns

An evergreen campaign sends a broadcast again and again on a schedule you set: every hour, day, week, month or year. Set it up once and it keeps running until you switch it off. You manage them under Campaigns → Evergreen Campaigns.

Each time an evergreen campaign runs, Mumara ONE creates a new campaign, called a run, and sends it to whoever is on its lists at that moment. Contacts who joined since the last run are included, and contacts who left are not.

UseFrequencyExample
NewsletterWeeklyYour latest articles every Monday at 9:00
DigestDailyNew blog posts, sent only when there are some (see RSS feeds)
Monthly updateMonthlyProduct news on the 1st of each month
Annual reminderYearlyRenewal notice every year in the same month
Everyone gets every run

Each run goes to the whole audience again, so an evergreen campaign suits content that changes by itself between runs, such as an RSS feed or Dynamic Content Tags. To send a sequence of different emails to each new contact instead, use Drip Campaigns.

The Evergreen Campaigns page

Go to Campaigns → Evergreen Campaigns.

  • Add New creates an evergreen campaign.
  • Limit, on plans with a limit, shows how many evergreen campaigns you have and how many your plan allows, for example 2 / 5.
  • The status filter shows Active, Inactive or All campaigns.

Create an evergreen campaign

Go to Campaigns → Evergreen Campaigns and click Add New. The page is titled Schedule an Evergreen Campaign, and the form has the same four steps as a regular campaign. You can also start from Actions → Schedule and choose Evergreen as the campaign type. This section covers what's different for evergreen campaigns; for everything else, see Scheduling Campaigns.

Step 1: Campaign Type

  1. Enter a Campaign Name. Each run is named after it, followed by Run and a number.
  2. Campaign Type is set to Evergreen.
  3. Tick the contact lists to send to. Evergreen campaigns send to contact lists; segments aren't offered.
  4. Optionally switch on Target audience filters to send to only some of the contacts on those lists. The filters are applied again at every run. See Target audience filters.

Step 2: Broadcasts

Tick the broadcast to send. If you tick more than one, each contact receives one of them at each run.

Step 3: Sending Nodes

Tick the pool to send through. In Mumara ONE, the entries in this step are your pools, and only pools you can currently send through are offered. Sending Mode and Sending Node Selection work as described in Step 3: Sending Nodes.

Step 4: Settings

Repetition Interval sets how often the campaign runs:

IntervalYou chooseRuns
YearlyMonth, Date of Month and a timeOnce a year, on that date
MonthlyDate of Month and a timeOnce a month, on that date
WeeklyDay of Week and a timeOnce a week, on that day
DailyA timeOnce a day
HourlyMinute of HourEvery hour, at that many minutes past the hour

The time box is labelled Date/time to start the campaign. Times are in your account's time zone; see My Profile.

Pick a date every month has

With Monthly, a date such as the 31st doesn't exist in every month. Choose a date from 1 to 28 if the campaign must run every month.

The rest of the step is the same as for a regular campaign: Threads, Hourly speed, Insert Unsubscribe Link, Track Opens, Track Clicks, Double-check duplicates, Skip unconfirmed, Add List-Unsubscribe header, Google Analytics (UTM) where available, Sender Information, Override subject line and Send Test Preview. See Step 4: Settings. As for every campaign in Mumara ONE, a custom sender email must be on an Active sending domain, and there's no bounce address to set.

Click Submit. You're taken back to Evergreen Campaigns, where the new campaign is Active and shows its Next Run.

Only send when an RSS feed has new content

Where RSS feeds are available on your account, step 4 of an evergreen campaign created from Campaigns → Evergreen Campaigns also has Schedule if RSS has new feed. It turns an evergreen campaign into an automatic digest that only goes out when there's something new to say.

When it's on, every run first checks the RSS feeds used by the tags you pick under Select the RSS Tags to Look For:

  • If any of those feeds has published new content since the last run, the run goes ahead.
  • If none has, the run is skipped, and the campaign tries again at the next scheduled time.

The feed content itself reaches the email through a Dynamic Content Tag with an RSS rule, placed in your broadcast. Set it up in this order:

1. Campaigns → Dynamic Content Tags
Create a tag with an RSS rule: the feed URL and how each item looks.

2. Campaigns → Broadcasts
Put the tag, for example [[blog-digest]], in the broadcast's content.

3. Campaigns → Evergreen Campaigns → Add New
Choose the broadcast and the frequency, for example Daily at 08:00.
Switch on "Schedule if RSS has new feed" and pick the tag.

The tag list only shows Dynamic Content Tags that have an RSS rule.

How runs work

At each scheduled time, Mumara ONE:

  1. Checks that the evergreen campaign is Active, and, with Schedule if RSS has new feed, that there's new content.
  2. Checks that its lists have contacts who can receive email. If they don't, the run is skipped.
  3. Creates a run: a new campaign with the evergreen campaign's settings, named after it with Run and a number, such as Weekly newsletter Run 12.
  4. Prepares and sends the run like any other campaign, to whoever is on the lists and matches the filters at that moment.

Runs appear in two places: under the campaign's Total Runs (or View Scheduled), and under Campaigns → Scheduled Campaigns with the Evergreen Campaigns filter. You can pause, resume or delete a single run there, as for any campaign. See Managing a campaign.

Managing evergreen campaigns

Turn a campaign on or off

Use the Status switch in the list. While it's off, the campaign doesn't run; switch it back on and it runs again at its next scheduled time. You'll see "Status has been updated successfully".

Edit a campaign

Choose Edit from the Actions menu. Edit Evergreen Campaign has the same four steps. Change what you need and submit.

Changes apply from the next run. A run that's already preparing or sending keeps the settings it started with.

View the runs

Click the Total Runs number, or choose View Scheduled from the Actions menu. The page lists every run of the campaign; use Select Campaign at the top to switch to another evergreen campaign.

ColumnWhat it shows
Campaign NameThe run's name: the campaign's name with Run and a number.
Start TimeWhen the run started.
StatusThe run's status, as on Scheduled Campaigns. A run that's about to send shows Waiting for Execution. See Campaign statuses.
AudienceHow many contacts the run was sent to.
ProgressEmails sent out of the audience.
ActionsPause, resume, change the hourly speed or delete the run, depending on its status.

Flush or delete a campaign

The Actions menu has two delete options. Both ask you to confirm and then run in the background.

OptionWhat it removes
FlushEvery run of the campaign, with their statistics. The evergreen campaign itself stays and keeps running on schedule.
Flush and DeleteThe evergreen campaign, all its runs and their statistics.
Flushing removes statistics

Both options delete the statistics of the runs they remove. Download any reports you want to keep from Statistics → Evergreen Stats first.

Statistics

Statistics → Evergreen Stats shows every evergreen campaign and each of its runs, so you can compare results from run to run. See Evergreen Stats.

Plan limits

Your plan may limit how many evergreen campaigns you can have. The Limit button shows your usage. When you reach the limit, Evergreen is no longer offered as a campaign type, and Add New tells you the limit has been reached. Delete a campaign you no longer need, or move to a plan that allows more. See Mumara ONE pricing.

Every run counts towards your plan's sending allowance like any other campaign. If a run reaches a sending limit, it's paused like any other campaign. To have paused runs start again on their own, switch on Auto-resume campaigns and Resume evergreen campaigns under User Settings. See When Mumara ONE pauses a campaign.

Good practice

  • Match the frequency to your content. Daily suits news and deals; weekly suits most newsletters; monthly suits summaries.
  • Let the content change by itself. Use RSS or Dynamic Content Tags so each run says something new.
  • Tell subscribers what to expect when they sign up, such as "our digest every Monday".
  • Watch engagement over time in Evergreen Stats. Falling opens or rising unsubscribes mean the campaign runs too often or the content has gone stale.
  • Switch campaigns off rather than leaving ones you no longer need running.

Troubleshooting

ProblemWhat to check
The campaign doesn't runIts Status is on; its lists have contacts and a sender on an Active domain; the pool can send. Check the latest run under View Scheduled for its status.
Next Run isn't what I expectedTimes are in your account's time zone. Check the time zone in My Profile and the interval's settings.
An RSS campaign never sendsThe feed hasn't published anything new since the last run, or the tag you picked isn't the one in the broadcast. Check that the feed URL opens in a browser and shows recent items.
Evergreen isn't offered as a campaign typeYou've reached your plan's evergreen campaign limit.
A run shows System pausedClick its warning icon. See When Mumara ONE pauses a campaign.
