Lists & Contacts Overview

Before you can send a campaign, you need people to send it to. In Mumara ONE, those people are contacts, and contacts live in contact lists. This section covers everything about storing, organising and cleaning your audience.

Contact lists

A contact list is where your contacts are stored. Each list has:

  • a name, and optionally a group to file it under
  • sender details: the Sender Name, a Sender Email on one of your Active sending domains and a Reply-to Email
  • the custom fields its contacts can hold
  • optional extra email headers

There's no bounce address on a list. Mumara ONE processes bounces for you. See Bounces and Complaints.

Contacts

A contact is one email address on one list. If the same person is on three of your lists, they're three contacts, each with its own statuses. A contact has:

  • an email address
  • field values such as first name, last name or company
  • statuses: active or inactive, confirmed or unconfirmed, subscribed or unsubscribed, and bounced, spam or suppressed when those apply
  • a history: the emails it was sent, its opens and clicks, and changes made to it

Custom fields

Custom fields store information beyond the email address. Mumara ONE includes common fields such as First Name, Last Name, Company and Country, and you can create your own of type text, number, date, drop-down, checkboxes and more. Use them to personalise emails and to build segments.

Segments

A segment is a group of contacts that match conditions you set, for example:

  • contacts in the United States who opened your last campaign
  • contacts whose Plan field is Premium
  • contacts added in the last 30 days

Segments are re-evaluated as your data changes, so you don't have to maintain them by hand. You can send a campaign to a segment, and copy or move its contacts into a list.

Suppression lists

Suppression lists stop email reaching addresses you shouldn't mail:

TypeWhat it blocks
Email SuppressionIndividual email addresses
Domain SuppressionEvery address at a domain, such as example.com
IP SuppressionContacts who engage with your email from an IP address or range you list

Each entry is either Global, covering every list, or tied to one list.

Contact statuses

These statuses decide who actually receives your campaigns:

StatusWhat it meansEffect on sending
ActiveThe contact is switched onMailed normally
InactiveYou switched the contact offLeft out
ConfirmedThe contact confirmed their subscriptionMailed normally
UnconfirmedThe contact hasn't confirmedLeft out when Skip unconfirmed is on
UnsubscribedThe contact opted out of this listLeft out
Soft BouncedA recent message couldn't be delivered, for a reason that may clearStill mailed
Hard BouncedThe address permanently failedLeft out
SpammedThe contact reported your email as spamLeft out
SuppressedThe address matches a suppression list entryLeft out

Mumara ONE sets Hard Bounced, Soft Bounced and Spammed automatically from the bounces and complaints it processes. See Bounces and Complaints.

Quick start

  1. Create a list. Go to Lists → Add Contact List, enter a List Name, and fill in the sender details. The Sender Email must be on an Active sending domain. See Contact Lists.
  2. Add contacts.
    • Import a CSV or TXT file with Contacts → Import Contacts.
    • Add people one at a time with Contacts → Add a Contact.
    • Collect sign-ups on your website with a web form.
    • Add contacts from your own systems through the API.
  3. Organise. File related lists into groups, for example by brand or by region.
  4. Target. Build segments for the audiences you send to often.
  5. Keep lists clean. Let Mumara ONE handle bounces and complaints, suppress addresses that must never be mailed, and remove contacts that never engage.
Only add people who asked to hear from you

Mumara's Acceptable Use Policy requires permission from every recipient and bans bought, rented and scraped lists. Mailing people who didn't opt in leads to complaints and bounces, which can get your lists blocked. See Compliance.

Good practice

  • Name lists clearly. "Newsletter: website sign-ups" says more than "List 1".
  • Group related lists so they're easy to find when you schedule a campaign.
  • Use double opt-in on web forms, so every contact is confirmed.
  • Never re-add people who unsubscribed or complained. Add them to Email Suppression so no future import brings them back.
  • Segment by engagement. Send more to people who open and click, and less to people who don't.
  • Check segment counts before you send, so you know who you're mailing.

Plan limits

Your plan can limit how many contact lists, contacts and segments you can have. When a limit applies, the app shows it, for example as a Contacts Limit button on a list's contacts page. See Plan & Usage and Mumara ONE pricing.
