Engagements
Analytics → Engagements shows how recipients interact with the email you send: who opened it, who clicked, from where and on what device. It covers both your marketing (newsletter) email and your transactional email, which makes it the place to compare the two.
Opens and clicks are only recorded for tracked email:
- Marketing email: when open and click tracking are on for the campaign.
- Transactional email: when Track Opens and Track Clicks are on for the Bridge. See Bridges.
In both cases, the sending domain's tracking domain must be set up. See Sending Domains.
Choose the period
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Period list | Today, Yesterday, Last 7 Days or Last 30 Days. |
| Date range box | The exact start and end of the period, in your account's time zone. Read-only. |
| Refresh | Reloads the page for the same period. |
How far back you can look depends on your plan's log retention. See How long data is kept.
Counters and chart
The chart's title shows the date range. Above it, four counters give the totals for the period:
| Counter | What it counts |
|---|---|
| Engagements | Opens, clicks and complaints added together |
| Open | Open events |
| Clicks | Click events on tracked links |
| Complaints | Spam complaints reported by mailbox providers |
The chart plots Open, Clicks and Complaints (the Number of Events) by hour for Today and Yesterday, and by day for longer periods.
These are event counts, not unique people. A contact who opens a message three times adds three opens, and two clicks on the same link add two clicks. Some mail systems also open messages or follow links automatically, for example to scan them for security. The engagement log's details window flags events that look automated.
Events
The Events section breaks your opens down in several lists. Each list shows the top entries with a count and a bar:
| List | Grouped by |
|---|---|
| Engagements by continents | Continent the open came from |
| Engagements by states | State or province, with the country code |
| Engagements by locations | City, state and country together |
| Engagements by subjects | Email subject |
| Engagements by domains | Recipient domain, such as a mailbox provider |
| Engagements by countries | Country |
| Engagements by cities | City, with its state |
| Engagements by regions | Region |
| Browsers | Browser or email app |
| Devices | Device |
| Operating system | Operating system |
| Engagements | Opens, clicks and complaints compared |
Use the list at the top right of the section to choose how many rows each list shows: 3, 5, 10 or 50 items. When a list has more entries, click View more to see them all in a window.
Locations come from the IP address the open came from, so they're approximate. Unknown means the location couldn't be determined, which is common when the open came through a privacy proxy or a corporate network.
Newsletter vs Transactional
Two panels compare your marketing and your transactional email side by side: Open, Clicks and Complaints for Newsletter, and the same for Transactional.
Engagements by countries
A world map shades each country by its number of opens. Use the zoom buttons to look closer, and hover over a country to see its count.
The engagement log
At the bottom of the page is a table with one row per open or click in the period, newest first.
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| From | The sender's name and email address, with an Open or Click badge and whether it was Newsletter or Transactional email |
| To | The recipient |
| Subject | The email's subject. Hover to see it in full. |
| Country | Where the event came from, with a flag |
| Time | When the open or click happened |
| Details | An eye icon that opens the event's details |
Use Previous and Next to page through, and the length menu to show 5, 10, 50 or 100 rows per page.
Filter the log
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Engagement Type | All, Campaign opened, Campaign clicked, Transactional opened or Transactional clicked. The table updates as soon as you choose. |
| Filter by | Choose a field to search on, such as Recipient Email, Sender Email, Email Subject, Destination URL, Browser, Device, Operating System, Country, City or IP Address. |
| Condition | is, isn't, Contains or Doesn't contain. |
| Type here... | The value to look for. For yes-or-no fields such as Bot, pick Yes or No instead. |
| Search | Runs the search. The × next to it clears the filter. |
For example, to see who clicked a particular link, choose Engagement Type → Campaign clicked or Transactional clicked, then Filter by → Destination URL, Contains, and part of the link.
Event details
Click the eye icon in the Details column. The window's title shows the event type, such as Campaign Open (Newsletter), and lists everything recorded about the event, for example:
- Destination URL: the link that was clicked (clicks only)
- Sender Email, Recipient Email, Email Subject and Message Id
- Email Sent Date and Engagement Date
- Agent, Browser, Browser Version, Operating System, OS Version, Platform, Device and Device Type
- IP Address, Continent, Country, City, Subdivision, Zip/Postal Code and Network
- Bot, and flags such as Anonymous VPN, Hosting Provider or Tor Exit Node, which help you spot opens and clicks that weren't made by a person
When the message's delivery record is available, a green eye icon next to the title opens it, with the delivery status, the response from the recipient's server and the rest of the delivery detail described in Delivery Logs.
Common questions
Why are there no opens or clicks for my transactional email?
Check that Track Opens and Track Clicks are on for the Bridge, that the message has an HTML part, and that the sending domain in the From address has its tracking domain set up. Plain-text email can't be tracked.
Why are my open counts higher than my Statistics?
Engagements counts every event across all your sending, including transactional email and repeat opens. Campaign statistics are per campaign. See Analytics and Statistics.
Why does a click come from a country my contact isn't in?
The location comes from the IP address the request came from. Security scanners, VPNs, privacy proxies and corporate gateways can all make an event appear to come from somewhere else. Check the Bot and proxy flags in the event's details.
Why is my older engagement data missing?
Engagement detail is kept for as long as your plan's log retention. See How long data is kept.
